Looking at a typical week of food for families around the world, I was interested to see not only the contrasts, but that the greatest weekly expenditures don’t equal the greatest nutrition (though the least is the smallest and saddest amount of food). I think Egypt, where the weekly expenditure is about 1/5th the American, has the most appetizing table.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Have a look here.

I found that fascinating and moving, but I really query the German amount. We are a family of five, and I never spend over €150 a week, even when we are entertaining and buying alcohol. Something’s a bit off there.
I agree that the Egyptian table looked amazing. Did you notice how slender they all are? No frozen pizzas being eaten there!
From the photo it isn’t always easy to see how many packaged foods there are. I think that makes a big difference. From your blog I get the impression that you don’t use a lot of processed, premixed, packaged ready to eat foods. I think that also speaks to the slenderness of the Egyptian family!
This was really enlightening. Thanks for sharing it!
Boo hoo – I couldn’t get it to play! I’ll try it on a different computer later on.
Thanks, Becca.
I hope it comes through!
