I feel for Michaelle Jean. She signed up for a kushy job that involved ribbon cutting and making warm-hearted speeches, receiving royal visitors and heads of state, and formalities of parliament, like swearing in the Prime Minister. But now, as governor-general of Canada, she has to make a decision that will have lasting impact and in doing so she will make history. I would not wish her job. Lucky for us, she is a smart cookie and, I believe, sincere and conscientious, given her track record as a journalist before she became the GG (usually associated with such things as the GG awards, not making or unmaking Parliament).
Coalition: a government can be formed by the majority of the House.
Proroguation: suspending parliament for a while.
Both of these are within Canadian law. Both are uncommon–but she has to decide which way we will go.
Good luck Michaelle Jean. May all those you consult with provide you with the information you need to decide wisely.
